In 2005, Sophiensaele started the project „Volkspalast - Der Berg“. Architects, artists and students from widely different disciplines were invited to take part in a democratically organized construction process to realize their own architectural visions of the theme of „Berg“ (mountain). Apart from the rather monumental walk-about installation of the mountain inside the Palast der Republik and right in front of it, the „Berg-Hotel“ was created from scaffolding and plywood board by the raumlabor_Berlin architects’ team, complete with four double bedrooms, a reception area, und a mountain lake. Staying overnight in front of the Volkspalast was offered to visitors as part and parcel of discussing the significance of the place. raumstar* had a share in the design and building of this construction, using scaffolding material to erect the basic construction which carried a crystalline outer skin, and also cooperated in designing the hotel rooms and in the course of the three-week performance contributed to staffing the hotel with suitable personnel.
